How To Rewrite Your Style Story

Stories make up our lives, but sometimes those stories don’t serve us. The good news is, we can re-write those stories anytime we choose!

Today I want to talk about style stories. The stories we tell ourselves that dictates how we dress. If you don’t like the way you look, maybe it’s time we take a look at those stories.

Our style stories often stem from the following:

– How our parents react to how we present ourselves.
– What society expects of us (specifically women) when it comes to attire.
– What we see on television and the media.
– Outdated and untrue stereotypes.

If your stories have you trapped looking or feeling a way that doesn’t feel good, it’s time to make a change! In today’s video, I’ll show you how.

If you need help creating the blend, then you’ll love the lesson I teach inside Style Confidence Collective all about finding your style identity.  Once you find this blend and re-write your style story, guess what? you get to re-write your LIFE story. Come do it with me inside SCC. LaurenMessiah.com/collective

Why Personal Style Matters

Like it or not, style matters. We, especially women, are judged by our appearance. Wishing it wasn’t that way doesn’t change the facts.

Michelle Obama said it best in her Netflix documentary ‘Becoming’:

“Fashion for a woman still predominates how people view you, and that’s not fair, that’s not right, but it’s true. That’s when fashion isn’t just fashion; it’s how you turn it into your tool, rather than being a victim of it.”

Image

I believe, and have been preaching this for years, that style is a tool you can use to get anything you want.

That belief is exactly why I ditched my career as a celebrity stylist to pursue styling everyday women instead.

After becoming one of the most sought after personal stylists in Los Angeles, I came to the realization that I was doing a disservice to women by being their stylist.
That sounds crazy, I know, but hear me out …

My clients couldn’t even pick out a shoe without my guidance! Every time they needed a new outfit, they called me. This was excellent for my bank account, but it wasn’t great for my moral code.

I wanted women to use their style to their advantage, not bankrupt them by being cracked out on a stylist. And what about the women who couldn’t afford to hire a stylist? What were they supposed to do?

So I decided to flip my business model on its head. I was no longer in the business of styling women; I was in the business of teaching women how to style themselves because the importance of style reaches far beyond looking good. Style can be used to increase confidence, open doors, get ahead, make more money, and as a way to express yourself/your brand more authentically.

100% of my clients experience increased confidence, improved sense of style, career success, and a greater sense of purpose after applying my signature blend of mixing personal development with style.

Stick with me if you’re ready to improve your style and your life. I have a ton of free mini-lessons on style and personal development to share with you!

How To Find Confidence When You Feel Overdressed

Back when I subscribed to Elle magazine, I would skip past the fashion editorials and head straight to E. Jean’s advice column. I’d eventually get to the style, but man, I loved reading her brutally honest advice more than anything else.

I love giving advice, which works out perfectly because people are constantly asking for my advice on all things style, business, and life.

BUT as much as I love being helpful, my time (and advice) is valuable, which means I can’t give away the goods for free. #knowyourworth

This doesn’t mean I’m not giving advice; it just means you gotta pay to get it! Don’t worry; I made it affordable so everyone could have access.

Every month inside Style Confidence Collective, I host a live Q&A where you can ask me anything. Last month I spent 90 minutes answering questions on business, mindset, and of course, style.

If you want to ask me a question, be sure to join SCC – our next Q&A is on February 19th. Join now!

Until then, check out a few Q’s and A’s from past months of SCC.

‘Style Therapy: 30 Days To Your Signature Style’ Cover Reveal

It’s always been a dream of mine to become a published author.

I have two distinct memories of when I KNEW I was going to make this dream a reality.

Memory #1: I was visiting my parents in Virginia, maybe ten years ago. My mom and I were at Borders (remember that store); she was looking for a copy of a magazine where I was featured even though I told her about 500 times that the feature was ONLINE and not in print.

I thought to myself, “I would love to have a book in an actual bookstore so my mom could walk in and buy it.” And right then, the decision was made, I was going to become a published author.

Memory #2: I was in New York City hosting a 2-day workshop for Bloomingdales. At the end of a very long workday, my assistant and I walked into an indie bookstore in the Meatpacking District. I pointed at the section with all of the style books and said, “My book is going to sit right here!”

One year later, I got a book deal.

Style Therapy doesn’t hit shelves until April 27th but yesterday was a very special day for my book because …

I got my hands on the first box of books!!!

It was such a big moment, and I couldn’t possibly open that box alone, so I did it live.

Thank you, everyone, for all of your love and support throughout the years. This book wouldn’t be possible without you.

4 Sneaky Things That Are Ruining Your Style

Not everyone who wants to improve their style looks like a total disaster.

Most of my clients look “passable,” meaning no one is going to throw tomatoes at them for being a “fashion don’t,” but they aren’t exactly style icons if you know what I mean.

They like style, they have pretty good taste, the clothes in their closet don’t suck, but they still look off.

After working with thousands of women offline and online, I’ve concluded that at least one of these four things is to blame.

In today’s video, I am diving into the 4 sneaky things that are ruining your style.

How To Gain Style Confidence

I read this quote in a Forbes article, and it stopped me dead in my tracks.

“The reason that so many people never fulfill their potential is not a lack of intelligence, opportunity, or resources, but a lack of belief in themselves.”
– Margie Warrell

This quote hit me hard is because I know what “a lack of belief” really means. It means a lack of confidence.

In the personal development world, confidence is defined as the degree to which you believe your actions will bring about positive results.

Just in case you aren’t picking up what I’m throwing down, what I’m saying is this:Without confidence, you’re screwed!

Image

Most of your struggles can be traced back to a lack of confidence – especially when it comes to your style.

  • You pass on wearing a really cute outfit because you believe it will bring about negative results like being made fun of or having someone think you’re trying too hard.
  • When you choose not to invest in quality pieces of clothing, it’s because you only believe in the negative results (the money will never be replaced, you’ll soon be living under a bridge.)

Now can you imagine the other areas of your life a lack of confidence is impacting?

  • Without confidence, you can’t speak up during a business meeting; you can’t stand up for your beliefs or strike up a conversation with a handsome stranger – you can’t do much of anything.

I want to help you change that.

I want you to have copious amounts of confidence. So much confidence that your life radically changes for the better.

I feel so strongly about this that I’m going to help you for FREE

Is It Weight Loss Or Is It Wardrobe?

The other day, I felt particularly cute, so I snapped a selfie and posted the picture on Instagram. I was immediately hit with comments and DM’s like this:

“You look so tiny!”

“No shade, but I just realized that you are really small.”

“How do you stay so thin during quarantine?”

While I am doing my best to eat right and stay active during this pandemic, I am definitely NOT in the best shape of my life right now.

So what changed?

I dressed for my body type that day.

That’s right; that bod has been hiding underneath my vintage Metallica tee-shirt the whole time!

With the change of an outfit, I look like I dropped 10lbs. Seriously, I am utilizing at least three body type methods to best highlight my hourglass frame- it’s like magic!

Let me be clear, looking like you lost weight isn’t the secret to success or happiness, but the additional boost of body confidence can improve your mood and motivate you to continue to take care of yourself. That’s what it does for me, anyhow.

If you want to learn how to dress for your body type, I can teach you. Click here to learn all of my secrets!

DIY No-Sew Face Mask Tutorial 😷

Two days ago Los Angeles received the following message from the mayor:

“Angelenos should wear non-medical face coverings when in public. Face coverings can be made using a scarf or extra cloth and should be used in addition to physical distancing.”

It looks like the rest of the world is following this recommendation because the CDC made a similar announcement yesterday.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a bunch of masks lying around. I did order a five-pack from my friend’s company, Sanctuary Clothing, but while I wait for those to arrive, I need to cover my mug.

My mom shared with me a tutorial that doesn’t involve any sewing; just a bandana and two hair ties.

I tried it myself, and it does the job.
