The 3 Things Holding Your Style Back

The #1 thing that destroys women’s sense of style, and their lives are what I call roadblocks! Aka the mental muck that we allow to take over our minds.

Today we are talking about Style Roadblocks.

The three roadblocks I am going to share today are based on my own experience and the collective experience of the many clients I’ve worked with over the past ten years.

No matter your size, shape, income, or life experience; on some level we can all relate to these roadblocks.

1.) “My body is too _____”

I can’t tell you how many body-related excuses I’ve heard over the years a stylist because it’s too many to count. Women won’t want to improve their looks until they “lose the weight.” They don’t want to even try shopping because “nothing ever fits me.”

I call bullshit. I have styled women from size 0-24 without any issue.
You deserve to feel good and look good NOW. No more waiting, no more excuses. Tailors exist for a reason, my friend.

2.) “I’m too broke.”

Money can’t buy you style. Some of the wealthiest people in the world look tacky and terrible. Meanwhile, some women exclusively shop at Goodwill who look like a million bucks.

There are so many fabulous clothing options at every price point, in fact, I do some of my best shopping at TJ Maxx.

3.) “People will think you’re trying too hard.”

If I had a nickel for every time, I heard this one. Apparently showing a bit of effort when it comes to your appearance is the ultimate crime.

I get it; people want to look effortless and not like it took a 15 person glam squad to achieve that look.

But at the end of the day, this roadblock is putting other people’s comfort ahead of your own. Change is hard, but it can be even harder on other people who want to keep you in the special little box they created for you.
On a subconscious level, your inner circle thinks if you look too good you’ll move to the next level without them. Maybe you will, and perhaps you won’t, but it’s your life to live not yours.

Well, there you have it, folks! The top 3 roadblocks that hold women back from achieving amazing personal style.

Closet Cleanse: Why It’s So Hard To Get Rid of Expensive Items

A few months ago, I posted a photo of my closet on Instagram, and people were pretty shocked. For a person with a career in fashion, my wardrobe is pretty darn small.

I don’t have a ton of clothing because I keep a tight, well-edited closet, and I rarely have a tough time letting things go. Plus, another reason my closet looks so small is because I keep my bags and shoes in my home office.

That space is more like a piece of the decor than actual style “stuff,” and I rarely think about it when I do my closet cleanses. There is room for everything that’s there, and it serves as a lovely backdrop for my videos.

However, recently, I’ve had a little voice inside my head telling me to let some of that stuff go.

The voice whispered to me for months. Last week I decided to listen.

I could easily identify which pieces needed to go, but I found it shockingly difficult to release them. After a little pondering, I knew the reason …

I shouldn’t have bought those pieces in the first place!

I screwed up and didn’t want to face the music. So in today’s video, I am showing you all of the fabulous designer pieces I got rid of and why. Check it out.

11 Basics Every Woman Should Own

I’m been pushing my Ultimate Wardrobe Checklist for years now.

Why? Because adding basics to my wardrobe changed the game for me.

Back in the day, when I was a fashion-obsessed youngin’ who thought she needed a new outfit for every occasion of her life … My closet was filled with statement pieces. If I loved it, I bought, and I typically only got to wear that item once and in one way.

This behavior resulted in wasted money (and seemingly insurmountable debt) and a personal style that was all over the place.

Then one day I hit me.

Maybe I should start investing in those “boring” basics the magazines are always talking about.

I took a pause from buying “fun” clothes and purchased things like a white button down blouse and a classic leather jacket.

WOW!

Instantly my look was more polished and I was able to create more looks with what I already had.

Total game changer!!!

4 Tips for Styling Vintage Clothing

Ever go shopping and find yourself hating everything the stores have to offer?

You’re not alone because that shit happens ALL THE TIME.

I was in Nordstrom this past weekend with a friend, and the selection was trash. Her immediate reaction was to give up on building a new wardrobe. This is where most people go wrong – one bad shopping experience, and it’s all over.

It started with “this selection sucks,” and quickly escalated to “everything is too expensive.” It was all downhill from there when she decided maybe it’s best to wear jeans and a plain tee every day for the rest of her life.

Yeah, it got that dark.

There is a solution, my friend – there always is. Shop where the selection is always unique.

Shop vintage.

You might be thinking, “Ewwww used clothes” or “I don’t want to look like some throwback time machine girl.”

I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to. In today’s video, I am giving you four tips for making vintage look modern. You’re welcome.

5 Ways To Look Expensive (without spending a lot of money)

The fascination with wealth and status has been around for ages. So it’s completely natural for you to wanna look like you’ve got MONEY $$

But the question is, how do you look expensive without actually being filthy rich?

Heck, even if you have money you might not want to spend all of your riches on clothes.

The answer is simple.

Follow my 5 tips, and you’ll be looking like Miss Money Bags in no time.

#1- Get your groom on!
Do your hair, nails, and makeup because a little grooming goes a long way.

#2- Fit is everything. Did you know Jennifer Aniston gets her tee shirts tailored?! When your clothes fit, even the simplest of garments can look like a million bucks.

#3- Choose solids over prints. When shopping on a budget (fast fashion especially), prints often look cheap because of the construction techniques used to keep costs down. Choose solid colors instead.

#4- Steam, iron, and press. Wrinkles are never a good look. Period end of sentence.

#5- Invest in a few designer pieces … but get them at a discount! Shop consignment stores, vintage, and discount retailers for a great bag or a pair of shoes. Those finishing touches can elevate your look.

How To Shine Gucci Princetown Loafers At Home

These days people are quick to throw out items in their closet because they either don’t like then or it has a little bit of damage.

I would never encourage holding on to raggedy shit, however if an item can be repaired (especially if you spent a pretty penny on it) … repair it!

Take my Gucci loafer for example. I’ve gotten every single dollar worth out of this shoe investment, so part of me wanted to trash them when I noticed how beat up they had gotten.

Then I remembered I’m a freaking stylist with an incredible toolkit at my finger tips.

So I busted out the shoe polish and got to work. This old standy from Kiwi costs less than $5 and completely revived my $800 shoes. I used my Sole Glow sponge to apply the polish, which made for a super smooth and effective application.

Easiest “trick” in the world, but something we just need a quick reminder to actually do it.

DIY: How To Resize A Belt At Home

Updating your style while you’re on a weight-loss journey can be challenging. On the one hand, it’s exciting to lose weight because you get to buy new clothes. But on the other hand, buying new clothes before you hit your goal weight can get quite costly. A new wardrobe for every dress size dropped adds up.

There are certain areas where you can cut corners, belts being one of them.

Instead of buying a brand new belt when yours gets too big, punch a hole in it with a belt hole puncher – a cheap and easy trick that will most definitely save you a few bucks.

How to adjust your belt with a belt hole punch:

1. Measure and mark the placement of the new hole.

2. Adjust the wheel to create the correct sized hole.

3. Punch away.

The 4 Biggest Style Mistakes Women Make

One thing most women fail to realize is that what you wear almost always directly correlates with what’s going on inside.

Now before you get all defensive and start throwing out exceptions to the rule, hear me out. I’ve been working as a personal stylist for over a decade, and I’ve seen it all.

So today, I want to walk you through a few common internal struggles that manifest themselves through poor fashion choices.

Style Struggle #1- Body Images Issues

It is not uncommon for women to struggle with body image issues. Whether it’s wanting to lose weight, having lost weight, or the inability to keep weight on – we’ve all got a struggle in that department. The solution that most of us come up with is to hide behind baggy clothing in an attempt to cover up “flaws” or to minimize unwanted attention.

Style Struggle #2- Money Mentality

Money often stands in the way of people’s style. They either don’t have enough money to dress how they want or have the money, but they can’t seem to part with it because they were raised to believe “money doesn’t grow on trees.” When I come across clients who grew up poor, they can’t bring themselves to buy new things. Instead, they sport hand-me-downs and wear clothing well past its prime.

Style Struggle #3- Other People’s Opinions

If only people cared less about what “other people” thought of them, the world would be a very different place. This style struggle has two extremes:

1.) The fear that people will think you’re trying too hard, which causes women to shrink themselves down to almost nothing, sporting dull “don’t look at me” outfits instead of dressing to align with their authentic selves.

2.) The fear of not being enough causes women to overcompensate by dousing themselves in labels to show the world they’ve “made it.” There is nothing wrong with labels, but when you’re overdoing it to impress others things get pretty ugly.

Style Struggle #4- Putting Yourself Last On The List

I see this with a lot of my mommy clients! They put their families above themselves. Sounds noble, but if you don’t take care of yourself how the heck are you going to take care of your kids? It’s the airplane oxygen mask concept; you get your oxygen first and then hook your kid up.

Believe it or not, those aren’t the only style struggles out there. So if you didn’t resonate with the ones I shared, I suggest you hop on over to this page to discover your struggle.

DIY Reach-In Open Closet (Under $150)

When I first moved into my house, the closet situation was scary. Both bedrooms had those awful sliding mirrored doors. Mirrors are great and all, but those doors? Tacky!

It had been on my list to “do something about those closet doors” for months, but it wasn’t until my video crew lit a fire under my ass that made me take action. Long story short, we wanted to film inside my bedroom, but the mirrors were going to ruin the shot.

I asked my contractor to replace the mirrors with regular closet doors. The plan was to customize the doors with trim, paint, and some cool handles. Of course, the design gods had other plans because due to the size of my closet, the doors would have to be custom made. Custom made doors would have taken around 3-weeks to build, and I needed the closet done in 3 days.

So it was on to plan B.

Plan B was an open closet. It was such an EASY project:

Step #1- Remove the closet doors

Step #2- Paint the inside of the closet and the shelving (shelves where there when I moved in)

Step #3- Upgrade the bars inside the closet (original were wood, so I swapped them out for metal)

Step #4- Decorate! New hangers, baskets, and some snazzy styling with books and accessories

I’m very happy with how it turned out, AND this forces me keep a well-edited and organized closet.  Would you ever do an open closet design in your home?

59 Must-Have Wardrobe Staples For Women

As a lover of fashion and a professional stylist, I never thought I’d see the day where I’d openly admit being a trainwreck when it comes to creating a functional wardrobe. Of course, that isn’t my reality today, but it certainly was ten years ago.

I was addicted to buying “pieces.” And not just any piece … cool as shit statement pieces for my wardrobe that were useful for exactly one outfit. I didn’t have any wardrobe staples because they were “boring.” I mean, who wanted a plain white shirt? At the time, not me.

Then one day, I realized just how important the basics were, so I created a list of 59 items every closet should have to make your wardrobe work for you.
