Dear Fashion Kitty

I love LOVE your blog…

I have a question tho.

What do you suggest for a fashion school girl desperately trying to stay in style with the couture of the moment… but doesn’t have any cash?

I go to fashion school in L.A. and wish more then anything that I had millions of dollars to spend on the haute couture items of the month, but I’m paying for school and don’t have much extra cash. Any thoughts?

Thank you for the Kitty love. Ohhh was I ever in your same boat. I also went to fashion school and found myself BROKE! Between buying fabric and art supplies, not only is there little money to shop there is little time.

Here are some crazy things I did to update my wardrobe when I was in college…

  • This will sound crazy (heck even scares me to type it) Tie Dye. I had these sample sale Betsey Johnson khaki pants that I originally purchased because they were like $5. I dyed them with a single color (not all wild and rainbow) I used a maroon/ red. The compliments I get on them is unreal and it cost me $1 for the Rit Dye. You can also grab up that dye in black to refresh faded black items.
  • Shop vintage/ or (gulp) thrift. I had my first thrift/vintage experience when I was in design school. I got ridiculous little necklaces for next to nothing and really funny tee shirts that I zip zapped through the serger to make them tight and cute.

Those looks were a few years ago and aren’t haute couture-but its fun for college and you can show your creativity. For more of the moment items shop online for sure and vintage (not thrift) Also shop the junior department for cheaper trendy items. Also check out Frugal Fashionista for top dollar looks for less.

Dear Fashion Kitty

Dear Fashion Kitty,

I have just got a heap of scarves from my Mom. They are the silky ones, not the kind that you wear for winter. Apart from going around my neck several times, I do not know how to use them. Do you have any ideas?

First of all…Yippeee. You lucky dog you. Scarves are totally my thing, I have been grabbing them up left and right at vintage stores. AND lucky for you, scarves ain’t for grandma anymore. There are so many ways to wear them; let me count the ways…

  1. Draped around your neck: Like style icon of the moment Nicole Richie
  2. Go all pirate on us and wear it across your forehead
  3. In your hair, like a wide head band
  4. Smaller scarf, tie it around your wrist ( like Carrie on Sex and the City)
  5. Slide through belt loops, as a sexy belt
  6. Make Aunt Jamima proud, and tie it on your head

Readers- have any suggestions?

Dear Fashion Kitty

I hate summer. I mean really hate it. I am to the point where I have maybe 3 cute summer outfits and the rest of the time I wear a knee length skirt and a fitted t-shirt. I need help! I know that summer is almost to a close here in good old Indiana, but I need help for next year. What are some good summery things that I should look for?

I have to note that I do not wear pants or shorts of any kind. Only skirts and knee length or longer at that (and dresses of course). I also do not wear sleeveless items, unless they are layered under something. Hence the challenge. I work indoors and almost anything goes. It is a casual office environment (I still want to be fashionable) What do you suggest?

Dear Summer Hater,

Ok. When I read this, two things came to mind. 1.) Damn this girl hates summer and 2.) You sound like you need a flowing bohemian look. Here is what you need to load up on (and its the time where its all on sale)

  1. Long Flowing Skirts: Flowing and airy keeps you cool in the summer and has a sexy mysterious tone with out over sexing it with legs galore. Shoprobertson.com has a cute white one for $36.
  2. Super Glam Flip Flops: Comfort and cuteness come together. Try styles like this from shopintuition.com or these from shoprobertson.com
  3. Jersey Dresses: I call them throw and go dresses. Throw em on and out the door, also try these in the jumper variation. Quick fix to jazz it up, it throw on a wide low slung leather belt.
  4. Tops: Since you don’t do sleeveless, or wear pants; you are dead on with the tight fitting tops. Try to make them a little interesting with a small print (like this angel wings top)
  5. Accessories: MUST MUST wear them. Because you are sticking to a semi standard style, throw people off with some cool accessories. A fun necklace, head scarf, over sized purse…anything. Be an accessories queen!

The key is to keep the clothes light and airy and don’t stress it! Its summer. Have a cocktail and relax 😉

Fashion Farewell: The Denim Bar

Denim Bar. Another DC favorite. Ever since I purchased my first pair of Seven Jeans at Saks Fifth Avenue by Maura (now the owner of Denim Bar) I was hooked. I have always LOVED jeans- and dabbled in designer jeans, but Maura showed me the light. After that, the majority of my premium denim came from the Denim Bar. My first pair of Taverniti’s, my first pair of Rock & Republics and the list goes on…

I stopped in for one last swipe of the credit card, and because I needed some black skinny jeans. I ended up leaving with Sass & Bide black stovepipes. Love them! They are so damn tight they suck it all in, and look adorable on.

I also found this magnificent white hoodie- but I resisted temptation (it was $200). Honestly though, I loved it so much I might go back and get it tomorrow.

Why Pop?

Just strolled in from the bar, for a non goodbye celebration with a good friend of mine (its a non goodbye b/c I know she will be in LA soon). Any way this is the second time this has happened to us- seeing damn buffoons sporting a popped collar at this particular bar. These people are fools! What are they thinking??

This is not in style. This is not cool. You are silly and stupid for being “preppie” You all get the point. I am clearly intoxicated, but if I didn’t get this rage out I don’t know what would happen.

*Oh and tried to take a picture- but not only was I obvious (especially when I asked for the bartenders help). I was also too drunk to keep the camera in focus.

The Shape of Fall

I typically don’t read Vogue (at least not American Vogue) I know burn me at the stake. But I simply don’t find it to be that interesting anymore. However I couldn’t resist picking up the mega fall issue at the airport the other day. The fall issues are a must read and Vogue has well written articles good for long red eye flights.

I don’t get the new shape of fall. Personally I think it is going to flop. Women don’t want that many bubbling and bulging articles of clothing in their closets. The issue was chock full of bubble, oversized, over the top silhouettes- and mounds of fur.

Has anyone seen this issue- Please let me know what you think. I am boycotting this trend for one.
