Trend Alert: Hippie Headbands

Nicole wears them, Mischa wears them, the hipster kids in Los Feliz wears them … it’s hippie headbands!

This trend has been evolving for months, heck almost a year, from wrapping a scarf around your skull Guns n Roses style to the full on hippie look. I have to admit it, I like trend. Not only does the hippie headband look cool, it keeps my hair in place better than a normal headband. And isn’t it all about the hair?

I have been trolling the web as I always do to find the best examples of this trend. I am having a lot of luck on Etsy but I am thinking that I might need to make a trip to the craft store before I go home tonight so I can create my own headbands.

What do you all think of trend? Fashion-do or fashion-don’t?

Dear Fashion Kitty, Mens fashion

I have a trick question for you since it’s about mens’ fashion. My boyfriend loves the coats Alex O’Loughlin as Mick St. John wears on Moonlight (the TV show, well ….before it was canceled). I have been searching everywhere to find out which designer makes them?

Thanks sosososososososo extremely much and keep up the AMAZING work, a day cannot go by without me reading your great blog: LOVE IT!!!

Thank you for the kind words about my blog 🙂 You’re right I don’t know much about menswear (well, I know how to get it off of men) but I was able to track down some information that comes from the show’s stylist …

Costume designer Salvador Perez Jr. certainly understands that Mick is an old soul trapped in the body of a 30-year-old. And because of that he perfectly blends classic styles with updated trends, giving our vampire detective a look that is dark, cool and modernly elegant all at once. Utilizing a palette of navy and black, Perez keeps Mick functional in dark denim paired with ebony or navy dress shirts and slim-fit, single-breasted sport coats with peaked lapels. Adding to the “look,” Mick tends to wear his collars turned up in an obvious nod to the gothic roots of our hero.

The look is easy to replicate at a variety of price points, but to get the full frontal vampire, spare no expense. Starting at the top and working our way down we suggest choosing a tailored suit jacket from Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani or Costume National Homme from their fall/winter collection.

Hope that helps!

Tarina Tarantino Fever: Barbie and Kidrobot

I love Tarina Tarantino — always have and always will. Tarina designs the most awesome jewelry that has some of my favorite girls on it … Hello Kitty and Barbie. Now Tarina is really tugging on my heart strings by designing an actual Barbie doll AND she is also collaborating with Kidrobot. Pretty exciting stuff.

Read more about Kidrobot/ Tarina Tarantino on Racked LA and hopefully on July 30th when the line hits the shelves I will have left the office with enough time to pick up a few things.

Enough about Kidrobot, on to the Barbie …

: : T A R I N A T A R A N T I N O : : Barbie

I pretty much HAVE to have this Barbie. I love Tarina more than words can describe and of course I love Barbie too.

There was an auction/party at her Melrose store last week and I am so bummed I missed it. Tarina auctioned off the Barbie’s with awesome Tarina vehicles. Barbie with a Vespa and (the one I wanted) Barbie with a VW Beetle (thats the car I have).

I am buying this Barbie now and if you get it online Tarina is going to throw in a free gift worth $55.

Dear Fashion Kitty, Gossip Girl necklace

Do you know where I can find the gold purse necklace that Serena was wearing on Episode Two “The Wild Brunch”?

Considering how old of an episode this is I doubt this item is still available and because this is the only picture I could find, it’s hard for me to dig down and see exactly who designed this. BUT what I can tell you is that this piece is easy to make. Head to your local vintage shop and look for cool coin purses. Because most vintage coin purses have gold chains you can turn it into the accessory that you really want. Keep in mind that the chains on those bags are really tiny but you can easily replace them with a longer ones and viola … a Gossip Girl gold purse necklace.

Dear Fashion Kitty, Find me these shoes

I trying to find these animal print t-strap heels. I have enclosed 2 pictures. Beyonce is wearing them in one picture, and in the other it Steve Harvey’s daughter. Could you please tell me the designer of these shoes, and where I could possibly purchase them (online would be great).

Well I have officially gone blind by squinting at those tiny pictures of leopard print t-strap shoes. So unfortunately my blindness has hindered me from finding those exact shoes. I am assuming they are Dolce & Gabbana or Roberto Cavalli but again not sure.

Readers do you know?

I did come up with some sexy alternatives for you though …

Dylan T-Strap by Michael Kors for $110 at Zappos (above)

Roberto Cavalli leopard print T-straps with a cork heel at Yook for $480

Super bad ass leopard print shoes from Cesare Paciotti at Zappos for around $1k

These here by Ralph Lauren aren’t leopard but damn are they hot!

Bargain Shopping, The Cube

As many of you saw a few weeks back, I took $50 to bargain retailer Marshall’s and went wild in their junior’s department called The Cube. I am not at all new to bargain shopping or places like TJ Maxx (which I call “The Teej”), Marshall’s, and Loehmann’s — I love those places but I often stay away from their junior departments for fear of not acting my age. But when Marshall’s sent me $50 for their junior department I decided to throw my ageism away and went for it.

When I walked over to The Cube I felt like I was walking into my junior high days, or at least what they should have been like. The department was peppy, pink, and perfect for scooping up the latest trends. The Cube was easy to navigate with prices that any babysitters salary could afford.

With my $50 I was able to pick up the following …

  • Peace sign tee for $7.99
  • Skull tee for $7.99
  • Madras plaid jacket for $15
  • Shorts for $12.99

Every time I wear any of those pieces I get a ton of compliments and they were cheap … like dirt cheap (without being poorly made). Next time I want fun, affordable clothes I am putting classic Britney Spears on the old iPod and heading over to The Cube.

Miley Cyrus in Sass & Bide

Sass & Bide- Due to Arrive Top

You know it pains me to blog about Miley Cyrus. I mean it really does. No 15 year old should be strutting around like she does ESPECIALLY in designer clothes that are for awesome adults, like myself.

But anyways, enough of me hating on Miley. I did really like the shirt she wore during her performance on the Today Show. It’s by Sass & Bide and should be available to purchase soon.

My Style-crush: Rihanna

It’s no secret that I have a crush on Rihanna. Not like my regular celebricrushes — Britney Spears was one until recently and I still have slight a crush on Lindsay Lohan. A style-crush is all about respecting their own personal style. And not some canned Hollywood stylists style, I am talking true style innovation.

Rihanna is different and different is good. She isn’t a total bad ass party girl, which is something I am usually drawn to. She isn’t a girl who is always at the normal celebrity shopping haunts like Kitson. She doesn’t even follow the trends, she sets them (the hair, the nails, the 80s style). Basically she is just like me, well minus that nagging the alcoholism and party girl ways (hehe).

The one thing I don’t usually notice about Rihanna is her footwear choices. Until now. Check out these awesome shoes by DSquared2 that she wore during one of her concerts. Do not adjust your monitor! These jagged little heels are intentional and totally bad ass. They are a brand spanking new style and $669 at Zappos.

Would you wear them?
