Real Life vs. Pinterest Life: Street Style

Pinterest is a powerful tool. It’s a great way to curate your ideal sense of style, and it’s a fun way to pass the time. I’d venture to say that Pinterest is one of my favorite tools and it’s helped my clients and my business tremendously.

There is one little problem. Pinterest Life vs. Real Life isn’t always the same thing.

>>WATCH NOW<<

In today’s video, we are tackling street wear and those fun street style stars we see on Pinterest. They look so chic, and they come up with the craziest combinations. But should you partake? And why do they look so good when in reality that outfit is crazy?

1.) Fashion week isn’t real life – at all.

The majority of the “street style” photos you see are editors/bloggers/influencers are “peacocking” aka trying their hardest to get photographed. The more outlandish and unrealistic the photo, the higher chance they have of getting free press. If you were to knock on any of these women’s door any other day of the week, you’d catch them looking just like you.

2.) Can we say gifted?

The majority of the gear these street style stars are wearing is gifted/loaned to them. Why? For the photographs!! The designer/PR firm often gives instructions no how to wear each piece.

3.) Their job is to wear clothes.

Fashion editors and bloggers are literally paid to wear clothes. They are the new breed of models. If you don’t look like this on the regular, that’s okay – it isn’t your job.

Listen, you are welcome to look to these influencers for inspiration. I do all the time. Just don’t beat yourself up if you don’t look as cool, expensive, or effortless as them – it ain’t so effortless. Once you learn how to draw inspiration the right way, creating your unique sense of style becomes second nature.

Real Life vs. Pinterest Life: Evening Wear “Strapped in and Ready to Go”

Pinterest is a powerful tool. It’s a great way to curate your ideal sense of style, and it’s a fun way to pass the time. I’d venture to say that Pinterest is one of my favorite tools and it’s helped my clients and my business tremendousl.

But there is one little problem. Pinterest Life vs. Real Life isn’t always the same thing.

In today’s video we are breaking down evening wear and the reasons why an A-lister is hitting an evening event is way different than you hitting a black-tie wedding or gala.

 >>WATCH NOW<<

1.) Shapewear. Lots and lots of shapewear. When a celebrity strolls out onto the red carpet, they are 100% wear shapewear. I’ve worked as a celebrity stylist, and these women are wearing double Spanx, butt pads, boob lifters, waist trainers. Not only that, many of them are sewn into their dresses. So next time you feel bad about a little belly lump, remember that you can breathe and they can’t.

2.) Money. It’s frustrating when you take a reference pics from Pinterest out dress shopping with you only to find something plain/boring in comparison. You may not believe it, but I promise you can look fabulous in a “plain” evening dress you found at Nordstrom. Will it have a crazy intricate train and neckline? No. Celebs have that stuff because a designer put them in it (sometimes designer pay the stylist to get the celeb to wear the dress). You could literally buy a car for the price of some of these dresses.

3.) It Takes a Village. We’ve got to stop holding ourselves to these impossible standards that the fashion industry and Hollywood set out. It took a village to make your favorite Pinterest image come to life. When you’re getting ready for a night out, you have, well, you. You don’t have a hair stylist, a makeup artist, a stylist, or a team of assistants working to put you together for the night.

I know what you’re thinking, so wait are you telling me I’m doomed to look like crap, and I need to get off of Pinterest? Noooo! Style icons are great and a necessary tool to help find your style. I want you to keep your expectations in check and develop a style for YOU – instead of becoming a watered down Pinterest copycat.

How To Wear A Hoodie … Without Looking Sloppy

I’ve recently become very obsessed with hoodies! Chic hoodies – to clarify. They are comfy and street-style cool BUT they aren’t always the most polished garment in town.

But then I discovered the chicest hoodie on the block! Thank you Prada.

The secret to making casual garments fancy is to find those silhouettes in a fancy fabric or with embellishments like beads or sequins. Instant chic.

Add heels and you’re golden.

Real Life vs. Pinterest Life: Casual Wear “The Dangers of Model Off Duty”

In today’s video, we are diving into those “model off duty” looks that are all over Pinterest. You know the pics when a model or a celebrity is casually walking down the street with a Starbucks cup looking fierce? They look so “effortless,” people say, and people want that.

>>WATCH NOW<<

Here is the issue, that effortless style looks that way because:

1.) The Photography. The paparazzi took 200 photos to get that one “effortless shot.”

2.) Accessories. Chances are this model/celeb is carrying the latest it bag, its wearing sunglasses, a jacket, and has on killer shoes. The second they take all of that off? They look just like you and me.

3.) Um, They’re “Perfect.” Ok, they aren’t perfect, but you have to remember that these style icons are manufactured. They don’t “wake up like this” They have trainers, hair stylists, makeup artists, stylists, photographers, and also know when they are being photographed. If you have those resources on a daily basis, you might look “effortless” too.

So yeah, hate to burst your bubble but that is why the whole “look for less” is hard to achieve.

The fix? Insert yourself into the equation and for goodness sakes don’t be so hard on yourself!! You’re an actual person with a job, a family, and a life. If you were paid to get photographed at Starbucks and had brands outfitting you – I’m sure you’d look as good.

Can you look effortless? Of course. But it’s all about adjusting expectations and wanting to look like YOU more than some celebrity

5 Items to Toss From Your Closet Now

When was the last time you cleaned out your closet? If you are like most women, you’ve cleaned out your closet dozens of times but without lasting results. Maybe you missed the five key items you should be purging from your closet NOW.

Let’s go through the list:

1.) Ill-Fitting Clothing. When something doesn’t fit, it takes a major toll on your style. Period.

2.) Items That Aren’t “You.” We all fall into this trap, you see something that looks fabulous on another person (a celebrity, a model, a friend) but when you put it on yourself, it just doesn’t work.

3.) Expensive Items You Don’t Wear. I have cleansed hundreds of closets, and 99% of them have a least one pricey item that is impossible to part with.

4.) Items From Your Ex. It could be a gift or an old tee shirt you wear to bed. I don’t care what it is, items from your ex’s need to go!

5.) Anything That Doesn’t Represent Where You Are In Life NOW. Your wardrobe should represent who you are now, and I’d even go as far say to who would want to be in the future.

How To Dress Up A Pair Of Jeans

I’ll start by saying this … I am so glad the skinny jeans craze has slowed down. While they aren’t gone for good (I still have a few pairs myself) it is nice to have some other options.

A lot of the new denim out there is, well, out there.

These aren’t your run of the mill jeans so it takes some extra effort to “dress them up.”

Tip #1- Add heels. Heels add instant polish to a denim look. It’s a no-fail trick that works every time.

Tip #2- Layer up. Rocking a topper like a blazer, jacket, or cardigan goes a long way. Much better than just a plain tee or a top.

Tip #3- Add some flash. Blingy accessories, sunglasses, and chic bag will instantly dress you up while wearing denim.

The Look for Less Is A Lie

I can’t tell you how many “Look for Less” blog posts, TV segments, and magazine articles I’ve read in my life. Flip open a ‘People Style Watch,’ and you’ll see it page after page.

On the one hand, it’s great, not everyone can afford designer fashions and straight off the runway looks. But on the other hand, the look for less is often a total lie.

So many of the “Look for Less” items magazines serve up are based on how they look in a photograph – the fit and the fabric aren’t a factor. These editors are thinking about the magazine content and not how the garments will fit into your lifestyle.

>>WATCH NOW<<

The end result? A bunch of clothes hanging in your closet that you’ll never wear. Total bummer.

Don’t worry; it’s not all doom and gloom! There is a way to rock the look for less without sacrificing quality. Head on over to today’s video to learn more.

How To Style A Boyfriend Blazer

I normally wouldn’t advocate for an all baggy outfit, but in this particular case … it works.

You see, personal style is all about experimentation. Trying things on to see if they work, if they do great and if they don’t go back and try again.

Today I experimented with boyfriend jeans, a boyfriend blazer, and an extra-large masculine tee shirt. I paired the look with a colorful boot and a Chanel bag to bring in a touch of femininity.

I am obsessed with this look. Comfort and style can collide.

A little tip to try when rocking a boyfriend blazer … scrunch up the sleeves! Seriously showing that little bit of your arm goes a LONG way.
