Accessorizing an Asymmetrical Dress

dress

Q- So I have this blue dress to wear for a friends cocktail birthday party that I’m wearing with black heels but not quite sure how to accessorize it and whether to have my hair half up or down?

A- I am no hair expert, I swear my hair almost always looks ridiculous (I would love to just shave it all off) so I can’t really give you advice on how to wear your hair. I think it would look nice if you tied it back, but really loosely. If you go with that hair option, you can wear a nice little pair of earrings.

As far as accessories go, you don’t need much. Like I said before, a sweet little pair of earrings and a bracelet should do the trick.

Getting People Excited About Fashion

indie01

Q- I live in Louisiana and there’s not much of a fashion scene here and I am, well, a die hard fashionista! Any suggestions on how to get more people into fashion?

A- I know the feeling. You would think LA would be more into fashion but shockingly, not as much as you’d think. When I lived in DC is was like 12 million times worse … the fashion is seriously lacking there too. Anyway, I think the secret to getting people

excited is to first find the people who are excited. Get me? I suggested starting some Meet Up groups in your area centered around fashion. Find fashion people in your area on Twitter and get to know them. Start a Facebook group to get a group of fashion lovers in your area together. Once you get the people together you can put together little events and get togethers. Eventually the whole town will be jealous and will want to get into fashion more just so they can hang out with you and your fabulousness.

Hip Hop Concert Attire

Q- I’m going to a Hiphop (RockTheBells) concert and I don’t know what I should wear!! Basically its going to start in the afternoon to 10:30PM. I have a few ideas already but I’m still unsure. I’ve been to concerts before but not ones that last 10+ hours. I’m thinking to wear some casual gladiator patent black buckle heels but what do u think? Should I wear sneakers? I don’t know please give me ideas!!

A- I am all about being ridiculous and wearing heels to events where heels don’t belong, but this time I am not going to recommend that. You need to be stylish and comfortable instead. Wear some really cute sneakers or combat boots (my new favorite shoe.) I am actually thinking you should wear some hot looking leggings, combat boots, and a really stylish hoodie. Something like this:

PS- How sexy is that Bordelle hoodie? Ridiculous, right?! Love it.

Who makes the dress from ‘The Fashion Show’?

I was dying without my Project Runway, so I had to resort to watching Bravo’s The Fashion Show. While it wasn’t nearly as good (hello, no Tim Gunn!), it grew on me, as did contestant Danella (who seemed to be the “Kenley” of the season). I loved her skirt in part one of the finale. Can you tell me who makes it?

UGH! I HATED The Fashion Show. I watched a few episodes because I was missing Project Runway and it was unbearable. But I won’t hold that against you 😉 I am not sure who makes that dress but I think this one from Forever 21 is a much cuter alternative.

How do I wear ankle wrap sandals?

Roberto Vianni Sandals

I just bought these sandals, and was wondering with what I should wear them?

I rarely (read only at weddings or on very special occasions) wear dresses or even skirts. If you think you can sell me on a dress/skirt, go right ahead! 🙂 I was thinking about jean capris or even shorts? But they’d have to be somewhat dressy right?

I’m crushing on these Hudson skinny jeans, but I have no clue if Hudson’s would fit me well, or if they’d be short enough (not to get in the way of the ankle strap). But the latter is an easy enough fix. I’m typically a size 27 in designer jeans, 5’4″ and 115 lbs.

No skirts or dresses! Okay, I won’t even try to make you wear them. We can work with shorts and capris. I am thinking you need to do a dressed down/dressed up combo — like this:

And PS- Get the Hudsons, they will fit you and will be fabulous! I’m also a size 26/27 in designer jeans and have a similar body type as you (from what I can tell by your description) and I LOVE Hudson jeans. BUT I wouldn’t wear them with the sandals, the jeans will be too long for them.

How do I wear purple suede boots?

I have a pair of Steven Madden purple suede boots. They have 3 1/2 inch stiletto heels and slouch – yes Prince is calling to get his boots back! What could I wear with these boots?

If you think these are crazy, you should see my purple patent leather stiletto boots — those are crazy! I think I wore mine with something insane, like leopard print tights and a black mini dress but I realize that look isn’t for everyone. Here is that I recommend for you:

Black, white, and a splash of red (I love red and purple together.)

Dear Fashion Kitty, V-Neck Tees

I love v-necks, but don’t have too many because the ones I like are way too low. Where can I buy cute v-neck shirts, plain and graphic, that has a neck-line that aren’t too low? I like the American Apparel unisex ones, but the sleeves are too long.

Word on the street is that J Crew makes a fantastic v-neck tee. I am not a J Crew girl myself but two of the girls that I work with said they are the best when it comes to V-necks. Hope they work out for ya!

Dear Fashion Kitty, Style Me!!

I have a skirt and about 4 dresses that I don’t wear because I don’t know how to wear them or what to wear them with. I love them casual so any help? Would a pair of black leggings or a tank top solve my problem?
Black leggings and tank tops won’t solve anyone’s problems — without some careful styling they could just make your problems worse. That’s why you have me to step in and help. So here we go.

White Skirt- I would add a black tank, then layer it with a cardigan. Add a brightly colored bag, hat, and sunglasses to complete the look.

Black & Purple Tunic- You can’t go too lazy with this piece or else it will look really cheap. I say make it edgy with ripped up leggings and a leather jacket.

Gray Tunic- I would dress this in a casual comfortable way for fall with black opaque tights and a boyfriend sweater.

For your last two dresses, you can really mix them up with some of the other pieces I recommended. Soften the dresses with some loose fitting cardigans or rough them up with a leather jacket. Or if you want to wear them now, add a cropped cardigan and cute ballet flats or sandals.

Getting My Learn On: School of Style

Don’t they (whoever the heck “they” are) say that its never too late to go back to school? I don’t know for sure what it is they say, but this past Sunday I went back to school! The school I went to was The School of Style in West Hollywood at Smashbox Studios.

The School of Style is this sweetly awesome 1-3 day training course about fashion/wardrobe styling. It’s taught by Luke Storey, a Hollywood stylist who has styled Marilyn Manson, Kanye West, No Doubt, TV on the Radio, and a whole bunch of other rockin’ famous people. What’s great about the class is that it isn’t just about dressing people up in pretty clothes, its about all aspects of the styling business.

Basically the class was awesome. I learned a ridiculous amount of valuable information. I left the class with a learning buzz. I mean, who gets learning buzzes? I do I guess.

If you are in the LA area and interested in breaking into the fashion industry, I highly recommend that you check this class out. There are 3 parts to the class (classroom, shopping, and on-the-job training.) You can take all 3 parts or just part 1 or just part 1 and 2. I have only completed part 1 but will definitely be taking parts 2 and 3 very soon.
