Fashion Advice for Pear Shaped Women

pear

Q- I am a typical pear shape – small breasts but large hips. My waist is small – about 30″ and my hips are 40″. I know how to dress for my shape, but I cant find clothing brands that fit me! I go to places like J Crew, Ann Taylor Banana Republic, and nothing works! I tailor when I can, but its hard just to get even close to my size. Do you have any recommendations?

A- You know to dress for your shape, so you are halfway there! I hate to break it to you, but a tailor is going to be your best friend. Buy big and get those babies taken in to fit you like a glove.

Another recommendation I have is MyShape.com. This site has 7 different body types to shop by and it gives you outfits and items to shop for based on that information. You can also go in there, create a profile with your exact measurements, and MyShape will style you accordingly. I think that MyShape is great for women who have difficulty finding clothes for their bodies.

So give those two ideas a shot and readers, if you have advice on this topic please leave it the comments.

Top 10 Must-Haves for Fall 2009

top-10

Q- In your opinion what are the ten Fall 2009 Must-Haves?

A- It was so hard picking 10, but I managed. Here we go:

Top 10 Fashion Must-Haves for Fall 2009

1.) Combat Boots- Wear them with skinny jeans, skirts, dresses, or even shorts (with tights underneath)

2.) Fingerless Gloves- I love the idea of wearing a tough pair of fingerless gloves with a dainty little dress or even with just jeans and a loose fitting v-neck tee.

3.) Leather Biker Jacket- A leather jacket is always in style, so it will probably continue to make my list year after year BUT this year they are particularly chic and versatile.

4.) Over the Knee Boots- Wear them with mini dresses (a night please) or over leggings with a big baggy sweater. I love the flat version the best because you will get more wear of out them.

5.) Boyfriend Blazer- I have been having fun with the over sized blazer trend for a few months now and plan on continuing with it into the fall. I like to wear them rolled up sleeves, a random vintage tee, and cool shoes.

6.) Destroyed Jeans- Wear them baggy and boyfriend style or tight and skinny- either way will work for fall 09.

7.) Fur Vest- I can’t live without my fur vest! Makes for a great style upgrade and it will keep you nice and warm while looking stylish.

8.) Loose Fitting Tee- Think Alexander Wang here. Loosey goosey and comfortable is so the way to go with tee shirts this coming fall.

9.) Pop of Neon- Neon is totally in for fall. I am opting to go for fun pops of neon instead of something full on.

10.) Oxfords- Meet my new ballet flat. I can’t wait to wear oxfords this fall, with skinny  jeans and dresses.

Styling a Vintage Capelet

Q- I was hoping you could help me come up with outfits for this vintage cover-up. (I believe it’s called a capelet?) I don’t really know hoe to wear it because it has a really diff shape. Do you think it’s still worth wearing?

A- Is it worth wearing? Yes, totally!!! It the perfect piece for making a casual outfit look chic. Wear it with something super plain like black leggings, black over the knee boots, and a simple black top. It’s like a no-brainer outfit that will totally look stunning. You could also glam it up a bit with a little Jackie-O style dress, sexy pumps, and red lipstick. Or wear it like I have it pictured above with a printed dress (something in the red or hot pink family) or just with some great fitting jeans.

Audrey Hepburn Meets Los Feliz

Q- I just bought these flats from Gilt Fuse– they are such a bright green I’m not sure what styles or colors (besides white and black) to wear them with. Ideas? I’m 26, 5’8″/135, and my style is a bit Audrey Hepburn and a bit Los Feliz.

A- Audrey meets Los Feliz, nice! Its like a little hipster Audrey. I don’t know, I could be totally off but I am thinking that’s like Rachel Bilson look. Keeping that in mind, I think we can go a bit crazy with the combinations. Wear a fun patterned skirt, a tee shirt, and and cool hat. Or a floral printed dress with a denim jacket. You know have fun with it and let the shoes be a playful accent. As Rachel Zoe says, “It doesn’t have to match, it just has to go.”

Styling Dresses for Fall

Q- I have these 2 tops/dresses and I’m not sure how to wear them. The gray knit strapless dress/top one is semi-see thru. I loved it so much that I got it even though I wasn’t sure how to wear it. The second yellow top is very flowy. Again, I loved it so much that I bought it from a small boutique. I love the bright yellow!

A-
I would definitely toughen the two of them up with some black for fall 09. I absolutely love the knit strapless dress. Add some black tights, boots, a statement necklace and you are good to go! With the yellow dress, I would throw on a chic black leather motorcycle jacket, some ankle booties, and a fun necklace or a ring.
