How to Nail the Nautical Look (without looking like a sailor)

Some may call it a trend but I call the nautical look a classic. Like navy, stripes, red, and gold ever go out of style. The real question is this, how do you rock a nautical look without looking like a sailor? It can totally be done and I’ll tell you how …

1.) In the navy

Swap out your basic black for a shot of navy. Navy is one of those neglected neutrals that needs some love. Navy is chic, sophisticated and can be nauticalized with a splash of bold gold accessories (see how I made a rhyme there).

2.) Put a lid on it

Not everyone can pull off a hat like this but if you can rock a pork pie hat, you will be considered both totally cool and very nautical. Give it a shot if it’s inline with your style.

3.) Gold details

Gold buttons, gold jewelry, gold chains … All things gold = very nautical looking.

 4.) Stripes for the win

A navy or red striped top is the easiest way to enjoy the nautical trend without looking like a crazy sailor.

5.) Anchors away

You gotta be careful with this one but an anchor print is as nautical as you can get. I like how home girl down here paired it with stripes, downplays the youthful vibe that an all-over can bring.

6.) Get it on the cheap

Don’t spend a lot on a trend you are unsure of. Target is all over the nautical trend and they are doing it up right!! Seriously, I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again … Target has seriously stepped their game up in the fashion department.
