I never thought the day would come but I am officially joining #TeamNatural. Yes that’s right I am ditching that “creamy crack” (aka relaxers) and embarking on a new hair journey. I am going to try to love my hair the way that it grows out of my head.
It’s been over a month since I’ve had a relaxer and so far kinda good. I obviously have a lot of research to do because I literally have no idea what I am doing. So why am I doing this anyway? Well for starters dousing my head with toxic chemicals never really sat all that well with me but I did it anyways because all I ever wanted was straight, silky, and manageable hair. Perhaps it was hair envy from my mother who has straight hair- I don’t know but it’s always been a quest of mine. However this quest has brought me nothing but disappointment and a lot of frustration. To be fair, I had natural hair once. I actually had dreadlocks for almost 9 years. Talk about carefree. Once I cut them off it was off to relaxer city and a few bouts with weaves/extensions. So today I am trying something new. I am trying to see what it feel like to just rock my hair in it’s natural state. Will I do it perfectly? Probably not. Hell I might throw in the towel but I’m going to give it the old college try and see what happens.Has anyone else out there made the transition from head full of chemicals to natural hair? How did you do it and which blogs did you read. I’m asking YOU for advice this go round. Help a girl out. I’ll take any tips you’ve got, just leave them in the comments section or tweet me!
Hi Lauren,
My name is Krystal Kendrick and let me just say that I love your style, tips, and advice. You have taught me so much, so I want to thank you. I’ve been natural for 4 years now (no creamy crack since June 2009!!!). It was very hard and it still is to this day. I made it through and I don’t know how. I had more downs than ups, lol. I had many bad hair days, but It gets easier with time and knowledge. I know you can do it, and I’m proud of you for taking that step. I get so excited every time someone goes natural. I wear my hair straight for the most part. Then when my hair gets rough I wear it textured. The possibilities are endless. I get a brazilian blowout out at least once a year to help keep my hair manageable. I love being natural because my hair is healthier, stronger, and more versatile. The hard part is figuring out what to do with your hair, and finding the right products for your hair. Check out Curlynikki.com, thirstyroots.com, and blackgirllonghair.com. Youtube is also helpful, check out Taren Guy and Naptural85, just to name a few. If I could help you with anything else just let me know!
