In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m mixed – my Mom is Cuban/ Caucasian and my Dad is African American. I wouldn’t change my rad race mixture for the world because it’s pretty darn awesome but it does come with a couple of challenges. My hair being one of them …35075_443631631059_8222253_n My Mom had no idea what to do with my thick, curly head of hair because it was so much different from her own hair. From chemical straighteners to at home remedies (a mayonnaise leave-in-conditioner … yeah that happened), my mom did anything she could think of to manage my messy mop.35075_443631656059_3826436_nSo it’s shouldn’t come as a surprise that once I grew up I had no idea what to do with my hair either. For years and years I have been on a seemingly endless quest to “figure out” my hair.

Three years ago I met my fabulous hair dresser who has been schooling me on the products to use on my hair. Two words: life changing.

This post is for all of you mixed chicks and moms of mixed chicks! My top 11 products for mixed hair …

1.) Mixed Chicks hair products. The name says it all, does it not? Finally a brand that actually specializes in mixed hair. I love their shampoo and conditioner but the products I am really loving right now are the shine and thermal protections products. The gloss and shining HAIR SILK and the Straightening Serum are the bomb.com.photo 22.) Pantene products for relaxed hair. A friend of mine turned me on to this stuff and I love it. If you are mixed chick with relaxed hair, this is what you want to use.Pantene-Truly-Relaxed-Hair-

3.) Wen Hair Care. This product is for all hair types but I’ve had a lot of success with it as a gal with mixed hair. Don’t let the infomercials scare you, this stuff really does work. The deep conditioner is my personal favorite.WEN

4.) Paul Mitchell Instant Moisture Shampoo. This is the shampoo my hair guy uses at the salon. I find it works best on hair that isn’t color treated. Once I started coloring my hair this shampoo kind of turned on me. There is a conditioner to match too, which is also wonderful for non-color treated hair.10657065-1354274590-810686

5.) Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Conditioner. Love this conditioner! Another product my hair dresser turned me on to. It smells amazing and makes your hair super-soft. It’s inexpensive too.Organix-Moroccan-Argan-Oil-Shampoo-Conditioner-Trio

6.) Design Essentials Silk Essentials. I can’t live without this stuff. I use it on dry hair to give my hair a little drink. Makes for shiny, healthy, and manageable hair.design essentials7.) Design Essentials Liquid Shine. A few spritzes of this stuff gets rid of frizz and adds a little shine.

8.) Babyliss PRO Nano Flat Iron. This flat iron has been recommended to me (because of my hair type) by multiple hair stylists. They also use it at the salon I go to. Get it on Amazon for the best price.asq-059_1z9.) Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner. This stuff smells so good!! I spritz it on right after I wash my hair. Why? Because that’s what my hair guy does and he makes my hair look good!BlackVanilla_Hair_Trio10.) Carol’s Daugher Mimosa Hair Honey. A little goes a long way with this stuff. I use this not only as a styling pomade but as a way to repair extra dry hair.

11.) Hot Tools Hooded Dryer. My hair is thick and I don’t have the time or patience to deal with a normal hair dryer. This $42 dryer has been quite the lifesaver.

12. Satin Lined Caps. Ditch the granny looking bonnet and the do-rag. Swap it out for this stylish satin lined cap. You won’t be embarrassed being seen out in public in it. I wear mine to workout and to sleep. Watch the video below to learn more.

Well I hope that was somewhat helpful. If you have any product recommendations, please leave them in the comments. Thanks!

  1. Hi! I’ve been trying to find hair products that get rid of Friz for real, so I can feel comfortable wearing my hair out. Its long, down to my butt, and is wavy not curly. Everything I try dose not work, PLEASE HELP!

  2. Please try Redkens Curvaceous shampoo and leave in conditioner, ringlet refiner and ringlet lock. So so good. i really get perfect ringlets if I wash, put in leave in in shower comb thru really wet. get out put other ringlet product while really wet, use towel carefully to jot frizz hair and let in dry on its own. There is other Curvaceous products and they work wonderfully too. My hair is mixed but 60% more towards my black father… I have had the best experience with these.

  3. I am a mom struggling with my mixed daughters’ hair. They are white/black mixed. I can not control their thick frizzy curly hair. Any advice to help me make their hair look good and decent.

  4. My beautiful daughter is 13 and always wears her hair up to tame it. While she looks great with it up, I’d love to see her confident wearing it down. She’s half Caucasian (I have very thin hair) and half African American (Dad had tight curls). She has natural spiral curls. However we haven’t found anything that will keep it looking from looking frizzy and damaged. Any suggestions. We’ve been using Wen for the past few years.

    1. I tried WEN for few months then one day my hair rebelled against their product line. It left a lot of residue on my hair.
I use a mixture of various drugstore brand products; my favorites are the Organix Coconut line & Organix Moroccan oil line. They seem to work well on multi-racial hair. There are various treatments & leave-ins in their line that I mix&match, whether I go natural or blowdry style, & depending on the season. If she wants no fuss, wash & go I recommend As I Am co-wash instead of any type of moisturizing sudsing shampoo. Use sulphate free shampoos when you do wash. A moisturizing conditioner PLUS a leave-in conditioner before styling are a must. For natural styling I use My Black Is Beautiful 3c curl styling creme. It doesn’t weigh down my hair, tames frizz, defines curls & waves without hair feeling stiff or crunchy just soft curls. Also do NOT towel dry by rubbing the hair. This roughens the cuticle & actually causes frizz. Squeeze or blot the hair to towel dry.
Our multi-racial hair care is really mostly trial & error for each if us until we find our own holy grail. Be patient & keep mixing/matching products until She comes up with what works for her hair texture! Also, don’t get sucked into buying expensive products from the salon. Best recommendation is use Sally Beauty & don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations from the employees. If any products aren’t quite cutting it for you, return it for refund & try something else
For reference I am African American, Puerto Rican, Italian & Chinese. My hair is thick, baby fine corkscrew type curl with patches of beach wavy waves mixed throughout.
Good luck on your hair journey!
