3 Good Reasons to Spend a Small Fortune on a Bag

When it comes to personal style, women fall into two distinct categories; “shoe girls” and “bag girls” … I definitely fall into the “shoe girls” category. I love shoes and have more pairs than I’d like to admit but that doesn’t mean I don’t lust over designer bags.

For years, I went without a designer bag. I actually bought my first “designer” bag right out of college (it was really a contemporary designer bag but I didn’t know the difference at the time). It was a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag from Barneys Co-Op. I bought it in Washington DC and it was a big freaking deal at the time.

Then the great bag drought began. The problem with amazing designer bags is that with them comes the big designer price tag. When you are in your first career out of college, getting the hell out of your parent’s house trumps a handbag (sorry it does).

But then something great happened … I got a big girl career and learned to appreciate a great designer handbag. With that appreciation came my first real designer bags … a gold Yves Saint Laurent ‘Muse’ and a black Yves Saint Laurent ‘Lover’ bag.

So you are probably asking yourself, why would I want to spend that kind of money on a handbag? Here are 3 good reasons …

1.) Lasts you a lifetime (or 2 or 3). Most designer handbags will stand the test of time. If you avoid the “it” bags and for a designer classic like a Chanel 2.55, YSL muse, Balenciaga city bag … Designers re-create these bags each season in different color-ways so they never go out of style. If you snag a classic like this it will last you your entire lifetime and you can pass it down. My grandma had a beautiful classic Gucci bag and she left it to me after she passed. The bag is still as stylish today as it was back in the day.

2.) Great re-sale value. The amazing thing about designer bags is that they retain their value quite well. If you are tired of your bag you can take it to a consignment store or sell it on eBay and get most, all, or sometimes more than what you paid for it.

3.) Instantly upgrades your look. You can have on head-to-toe H&M and look like a million bucks if you have a classic designer bag hanging off your shoulder. It’s a great investment piece that will last you season to season and will totally upgrade and update your look.

So there you have it, three pretty darn good reasons to invest in a designer handbag. Speaking of … I did a little investing this weekend. I was having a bit of a bag craving so I got a bag that I have seriously been lusting after – the Proenza Schouler PS1 medium satchel in purple. And on the same day I received a gift … a 31-hour bag from 3.1 Philip Lim. I am way excited about these bags that I will have forever!!

  1. I am a handbag kind of girl – shoes I can take or leave.  I have some vintage designer bags from the 80’s that still look great.

  2. LOVE your blog and this post is perfect cuz i was JUST thinking of whether or not I should splurge (tax returns came!!!!) on a classic designer …
