I’m a novice sewer but am trying my hand at fashion design. Do you know what kind of sewing machine Jenny uses on Gossip Girl? It’s a Singer, I know that much, and it says Singer on both sides. I think screencaps of it might be available for “There Might Be Blood,” somewhere online. I’d be like, beyond ecstatic if you could find that model.
As a gal who went to fashion design school and who spent a lot time sewing … I am going to advise you against buying a machine that you saw it on TV. When looking for a sewing machine, especially one for someone new to sewing, you’ve gotta get one that will work for you.
The machine that I have is a Brother and it is excellent. I have had it since my senior year in high school and it still going store (that’s damn near 10 years, honey!) It was a pretty inexpensive machine and the quality is excellent. Seriously, after going to design school and using a machine from like 1920 (no joke) you start to understand that less is more.
Another factor to consider is how much you are planning on sewing. No need to spend $370 on a Singer if you think there is a chance that you won’t sew very often. I am going to recommend to you the Brother LS2125I 10-Stitch Free-Arm Sewing Machine with Automatic 4-Step Buttonholer. The machine is only $80 and it has a four star rating out of 91 reviews!! It’s basically the more modern version of my machine.
Hope that was helpful and happy sewing. I am going to start getting back into designing and making clothes myself … So we can virtually design together 😉
