Dear Fashion Kitty, Graduation Look

My college graduation ceremony is just 3 weeks away and I still haven’t figured out what to wear. My school has absolutely no requirements for the shoes and dress. At first, I thought I would go with simple classy black heels or sandals since our gown is black and gold, but I feel like everything I see is just too boring. As for the dress, I need a dress that will fall right above my knees, but since I’m rather petite, most dresses tend to be too long on me. Any suggestions of shoes and dress for graduation?

I would definitely dress for what you are doing after the graduation. For the actual ceremony you will be all covered up by the gown, you know? So if you are doing something casual after the ceremony, I would go for a cute sundress. If you are going to dinner after the ceremony, then a little black dress might be more appropriate. I would also adhere to the ‘wear what makes you happy’ mantra … I mean, you just graduated and that’s awesome!!

Here are a few of my favorite shoes and dresses to get you inspired for you special day. Congrats, lady!!

  1. While shopping, keep in mind that it can get very hot under the gowns, even if you are indoors. Which means that certain fabrics (like silks) and designs (light colored solids) show sweat marks like nobody’s business. You don’t want to be that girl.

You might even want to wear an old but attractive tried and true dress you already have under the gown and wear whatever strikes your fancy after the ceremony. For my graduation recently, I wore a sleek cap-sleeve black and white dot stretch jersey dress from Forever 21 under my gown which I could depend on to be comfortable during the long day, and still look great after I turned in my gown. I then changed into the new silk dress I bought for the occasion AFTER the ceremony, on my way to my party.
