Books to Build Your Fashion Library

Q- What fashion books should I read? I have so much to learn in terms of fashion history.

A- There are so many great fashion books out there. I try to get as many as I can, but it can be an expensive little habit to form. I have a giant illustrated list of my personal collection below (some are missing but you get the idea) and below that is a condensed list of books for you to get your collection started.

Reading is Fashionable

That list has over 50 books and would cost you a fortune to buy all of them at once. I recommend the following books to get you started:
1.) The Little Black Book of Style
2.) Style A to Zoe by Rachel Zoe
3.) Fashion Now (Taschen 25)
4.) Stylist The Interpreters of Fashion
5.) The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own
6.) Dress Your Best: Complete Guide to Finding the Style That’s Right for Your Body
7.) TASCHEN Books: Fashion History
8.) Vintage Fashion: Collecting and Wearing Designer Classics, 1900-1990

How to Wear a Floral Sweater

Q- I recently bought this floral sweater and I was wondering how I should wear it. Any suggestions?

A- I think that adding some layers would definitely add a little unexpected magic to your floral sweater. I love the idea of pairing it up with a skirt too. There is something about jeans and a floral sweater that just doesn’t do it for me. Try something like this …

Tips for Aging Faux Leather

starsky-leather-jacket

Q- A few months ago my friend bought me this faux leather jacket from Wet Seal. Its a dark brown bomber jacket and I love it. The only problem is that it looks too new. I want to make it look more worn in, so it looks better. Are there any techniques you would use to make faux leather look more worn in?

A- Well, here is the reality of the situation — you aren’t going to be able to wear in a faux leather jacket. You are going to wear a hole in it before you are going to make it look worn in. Sad but true. So really the only hope for making it look worn is by taking matters into your own creative hands.

I haven’t done this technique on clothing (only on a pair of Converse), so proceed with caution … Break out the paint. Take a tiny bottle of craft paint that you can find at any basic arts and craft store for my 99 cents. For your brown jacket, I would get a bronze color or brown in a shade lighter than your jacket. Then I would take a dry brush or a dry sponge and lightly brush on a tiny bit of paint around the places you want to look worn in. For example, around the seams and on the elbows. Just apply the smallest amount of paint, applying too much will just look silly.

That’s all I have. If anyone else has some great advice, please leave it in the comments section. Thanks!

What to Wear in Las Vegas

las-vegas-strip-paris

Q- I’m going to Vegas in two weeks and I have no idea what I should wear to the clubs. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

A- I wish I had some really awesome advice for you but my advice is actually quite simple … wear whatever you want, seriously. Las Vegas actually cracks me up because it’s so freaking trashy. I remember the first time I went to Las Vegas. I went there with the idea that it was really glamorous. You know rich and beautiful people hanging around the casino, sipping martinis, and smoking cigarettes. The reality is, Las Vegas is full of people in sweats, drinking cheap booze out of plastic cups, while smoking cigarettes. It’s actually pretty foul.

When it comes to going out, I’ve observed that the attire is quite mixed in Las Vegas. I did a little people watching while I was in Las Vegas for a job on New Years.  The attire varied. You had your typical jersey tunics worn as dresses, over the top slutty sequin dresses, and then you had people in jeans and halter tops.

Just wear whatever you would wear to the clubs in your hometown. If you feel like going all “Vegas” on them, throw on some sequins and call it a day.

Have a fun time on your trip!

Advice on Getting an Education in Fashion

chen_man_two

Q- I had e-mailed you awhile back about the School Of Style and since then I’ve been following you on twitter as well as following your blog. I thought you had a lot of great tips and good advice for those who are just getting started in a styling career. I wanted to ask your advice on the issue of schooling.

I currently attend a community college in Chicago, and I am getting an AAS in Fashion Merchandising. They have an amazing program and I am confident attending will give me an advantage someday. I am planning to attend the School of Style this coming summer and I also think that will help me tremendously and teach me what any other school can’t.

My question for you then, is that I am wondering if that is enough? Do I need to attend a school to receive a Bachelor’s, or should I try to begin working and see if I can get an internship or assistants position? I have had so much trouble deciding what to do and what would be the smartest decision. Any help you could give me would be great! Thank you so much!!

A- That’s a great question and a question that I am sure many of my readers have as well.  The short answer is “yes, that’s enough”. The longer answer goes a little something like this …

I fell in love with fashion when I was 5 years old (maybe before that but I vividly remember knowing fashion was my life when I was 5). Since then I did everything I could to educate myself on the subject. I took sewing lessons from my grandma when I was a little kid, I sketched outfits daily after buying a book on fashion illustration when I was in the first grade, I made horrific little outfits for myself in middle school, I took fashion marketing classes and put on fashion shows in high school, I went to art school and got my Bachelor’s in fashion design during my college years, and I worked at Nordstrom and Betsey Johnson to get the retail perspective on things.

I did all that and ended up working at AOL, which has NOTHING to do with the fashion industry. After that I was determined to work in fashion so I just started to make it happen. I started my blog and 5 years later decided to take a chance on the School Of Style. Now, I am FINALLY doing what I want to do, which is working as a stylist and being my own boss.

Did I need to go through my laundry list of fashion education prior to my blog and attending School Of Style? Probably not. Do I regret doing everything before that? Of course not. I learned a ton on a subject that I love and would never take it back.

So my advice to you is this … Do what you have time for and what you can afford. If you really love learning and want to spend the time and money getting your Bachelors degree then do it. If you don’t have the time or money, then skip it because you really don’t need it. All you need is drive, passion, and a crash course on what to do.

Hope that was helpful and if you do end up coming to School Of Style this summer, then I will see you in class. Heck, after you graduate from SOS you may even get a chance to intern with me and Luke. We always pluck our interns from our graduate list first ;)

Clothes Off My Back: Feb 11, 2010

clothes-21110

Man, I love that my “weekend” day can be on a Thursday if I want it to be. Today I was just running around doing my thing … You know like getting rid of more things from my apartment, getting my car serviced and cleaned (my car no longer looks like it belongs to a stripper who turns tricks outside of the 99 cent store), and other weekend like runarounds type of things.

To do all that “exciting” stuff, I wore this:

> Tee shirt dress, Alexander Wang

> Vest, Forever 21

> Hat, Target

> Tights, Hue

> Shoes, Converse

Who Makes These Shoes?

christian-louboutin

Q- Do you know what brand these shoes are? It’s hard to read the logo in this picture…thought you might recognize it …

lace-shoes

A- Girl, those are made by one of the greatest shoe designers in all the land … Christian Louboutin. If they have a red sole and would cost you half to all of your rent money, then they are Louboutins.
