How to Make Your Own Gossip Girl Dress

jenny h gossip girl plaid dress

Q- So I know this sounds totally crazy, but I’m trying to track down this outfit from Gossip Girl from awhile ago. I’m crazy, I know. Even crazier is I’m considering making this dress myself! It looks fairly simple, and remember it being sort of a tear off dress (oh slutty, slutty Jenny) when she was, ahem, dancing with Agnes. The lining of the dress was shiny teal.

What is your advice for creating a dress like this? (And also, her other plaid/herringbone dress with the pink tulle underskirt that Agnes couldn’t stop yammering about? Different episode?) I can’t find any “how-to’s” online! I’ve only found a few images and a video, no closeup detail shots. Any help would be appreciated.

A- Well, you might be a little crazy. Not crazy enough to lock you up in the fashion nuthouse or anything though :) Making a dress is pretty ambitious but if its something you are up to, then who am I to stop you? Here is what I would do …

1.) Print out the images of the dresses you want to make and stick them in your purse

2.) Go to the fabric store (the best/largest one you find)

3.) Head over to the pattern books and start searching for a pattern that resembles your dress. You may have to get creative. If you find a similar shirt dress pattern but the dress has sleeves — just remove the sleeves from your dressmaking process. There are actually some really cool patterns out there and some are even from famous designers.

4.) Next start sourcing your fabric and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Some fabrics have amazing patterns but aren’t great for making clothes.

5.) Go home and get started! Take your time though. I always get all excited and want to complete the whole entire dress in one sitting. A rushed job usually results in a whack “obviously” homemade look. No one wants that.

So there you have it. The easiest way to make your dress. If you are dressmaking ninja you can make your own pattern but I wouldn’t advise that. Just thinking about all the patterns I made back in design school makes me cringe. Good luck with you dress.
